Iodine is a vital trace element necessary for normal physical and mental human development. Iodine promotes metabolism in the human body, growth, physical and mental development, and affects the activity of the nervous system along with the muscle, blood circulation and endocrine glands’ functions. Every healthy human should consume 150 micrograms of iodine daily, while pregnant women need up to 200 micrograms of it to give birth to healthy children. Human body receives iodine solely from the environment: 90% is absorbed from food, while only 10% is obtained from air and water. The easiest way forward is to take iodised salt. Only 5 g of iodised salt per day will fully meet iodine needs.
